How to Optimize Etsy Product Photos for Search
Etsy product photos are an SEO signal. Here is how to size, format, and compress them to rank, and to load fast for the buyer.
Etsy uses image quality and load speed as ranking signals. The product page that loads fast and looks sharp outranks the equivalent product with slow, fuzzy photos. Here's the optimization workflow.
Etsy image specifications
- Recommended: 2000ร2000 (square)
- Minimum: 1000ร1000
- Maximum file size: 5 MB
- Formats: JPG, PNG, GIF (Etsy converts internally)
- Max images per listing: 10
- Aspect ratio: square strongly preferred. Other ratios get letterboxed.
What Etsy does to your uploads
Etsy auto-generates multiple sizes from each upload: thumbnail, search-result, gallery, full-screen. The originals stay in Etsy's bucket and serve as the source for any future variants.
Quality of the auto-generated variants depends on what you upload. A 2000ร2000 sharp source produces sharp downsamples. A 1000ร1000 over-compressed source produces grainy ones.
Pre-upload workflow
- Start at 2000ร2000 minimum. Don't upload smaller: Etsy displays at up to 2000px in gallery view.
- Crop to square if your photo isn't already. Use Social Media Image Resizer โ custom size 2000ร2000.
- Compress at quality 85 with Image Compressor. Expect 400 KB - 1 MB output, well under Etsy's 5 MB cap.
- Strip EXIF metadata with EXIF Remover. Your product photos shouldn't leak the GPS of your home studio.
Image SEO signals
Beyond raw quality, Etsy uses image-related signals for search:
Variety
Listings with 5+ photos rank better than listings with 1-2. Show your product from multiple angles, in use, in scale.
First image
The first image is what appears in search results. Make it the cleanest, sharpest, most product-focused shot.
Filename
Etsy reads the original filename. A file named IMG_4527.jpg is a missed signal. Rename to descriptive: handmade-ceramic-mug-blue-glaze.jpg.
Alt text
Etsy lets you add alt text per image. Use descriptive, keyword-rich alt text, but write for buyers, not search engines.
Lighting and quality
Beyond the technical workflow, Etsy-specific best practices:
- White background for the first image maximises contrast in search results.
- Natural lighting beats indoor lighting in most cases.
- One product per photo: don't show 5 variations in one shot.
- Scale references in at least one photo (hand, common object).
- Detail shots (texture, stitching, glaze) in 2-3 photos.
File size targets
For each product image:
| Use | Target file size |
|---|---|
| Featured (first) | 400-700 KB |
| Gallery | 300-500 KB |
| Detail | 250-400 KB |
Smaller than Etsy's 5 MB cap, large enough to be sharp.
A real before / after
Listing with 6 product photos:
Before:
- Average file size: 4.2 MB
- Total: 25 MB
- Page weight: 35+ MB
After pre-processing:
- Average file size: 400 KB
- Total: 2.4 MB
- Page weight: ~3 MB
Result: page loads ~10x faster. Search rank improved 3-4 positions for primary terms (real-world data from a single client; varies).
