Resize Images for Instagram
Instagram crops images to fixed aspect ratios in the feed and rejects Story uploads that aren't 9:16. Resizing before uploading keeps your composition exactly as intended and avoids Instagram's automatic center-crop that can cut off faces or text. Drop your photo, pick a size, and download a pixel-perfect JPG ready to upload.
Instagram supports square (1:1), portrait (4:5), landscape (1.91:1), and vertical Story/Reels (9:16) formats: each has its own ideal dimensions.
Four preset sizes: Square Post 1080ร1080, Portrait Post 1080ร1350, Landscape Post 1080ร566, and Story / Reels 1080ร1920.
Your photo is resized locally in your browser. It is never uploaded to OmegaPix servers, never stored, and never shared. Instagram will see your file for the first time when you upload it yourself.
When not to use this tool
Upscaling tiny sources
A 400ร400 source can't cleanly upscale to 1080ร1080. Start with a larger source if your image is too small.
You need stories at full quality
Instagram re-compresses stories aggressively. For maximum quality, upload directly from the app instead of after resize.
Animated content
This tool produces static JPG/PNG. For Reels and animated stories, use Instagram's own tools.
Technical details
Instagram's post sizes in 2026
Feed square: 1080ร1080. Feed portrait: 1080ร1350 (best for engagement, fills more vertical space). Feed landscape: 1080ร566. Story / Reel: 1080ร1920. Instagram displays at lower resolutions but always re-encodes from your upload; uploading at the recommended dimension minimises that re-encoding.
Cover vs Contain crop
For Instagram, Cover (default) is almost always right, Instagram crops centered anyway, so the tool's Cover crop matches what Instagram would do. Switch to Contain only if your subject is near an edge and you want to preserve the full frame with white letterbox.
JPG quality 85 is the sweet spot
Instagram re-encodes everything to ~80% JPEG quality. Uploading at higher quality just wastes bandwidth; uploading lower means quality compounds. q85 hits the right point, slightly above Instagram's target so the final re-encode is the only lossy step.
Frequently Asked Questions
- What is the best image size for an Instagram feed post?
- For square posts: 1080ร1080 px (1:1). For portrait: 1080ร1350 px (4:5). This takes up more vertical space in the feed and typically gets more engagement. For landscape: 1080ร566 px (1.91:1). Instagram displays all three at 1080 px wide on high-DPI screens.
- What size should Instagram Stories be?
- Instagram Stories and Reels should be 1080ร1920 px (9:16 aspect ratio). This fills a modern smartphone screen with no black bars. If you upload a differently-sized image, Instagram stretches or crops it automatically, often with poor results.
- Will resizing reduce my image quality?
- This tool outputs JPG at quality 85, which is visually identical to the original at Instagram's display sizes. Instagram re-compresses every image you upload anyway, so starting with a clean 1080px JPG gives you the best possible outcome after their compression.
- Why does Instagram crop my images differently than expected?
- Instagram always crops from the center. If your subject is off-center, pre-resize the image here using the cover crop, then adjust the crop point by editing the source image before dropping it in.
- Can I use this for Instagram carousel posts?
- Yes. Carousel posts use the same dimensions as single feed posts, square (1080ร1080), portrait (1080ร1350), or landscape (1080ร566). Resize each slide individually and upload them in sequence.
- What about Instagram profile photos?
- Profile photos are circular crops of a square. Instagram recommends uploading at least 320ร320 px. Drop a square-cropped photo here at 1080ร1080 and use that. It will display cleanly even at Instagram's circular crop.
- Does this work for HEIC photos from iPhone?
- Yes. Drop your HEIC file directly. It is decoded in your browser and output as JPG, which Instagram accepts. No conversion app needed.
- Is there a maximum file size Instagram accepts?
- Instagram accepts images up to 8 MB. A 1080px JPG at quality 85 is typically 200โ500 KB, well within the limit. This tool shows the output file size on each download card.
