YouTube Thumbnail Resizer

YouTube thumbnails must be exactly 1280ร—720 px (16:9) and under 2 MB to upload without errors. A blurry or wrong-sized thumbnail appears letterboxed or gets rejected at upload. Drop your image here, let the browser resize it in seconds, and download a clean 1280ร—720 JPG ready to upload alongside your video.

YouTube uses 16:9 for both thumbnails (1280ร—720) and Channel Art (2560ร—1440). Channel Art appears on desktop, TV, and mobile. Each platform shows a different safe zone.

Two presets: Thumbnail 1280ร—720 px and Channel Art 2560ร—1440 px. Both output as JPG.

Resizing runs entirely in your browser. Your thumbnail concept stays private until you upload it to YouTube yourself.

When not to use this tool

You need motion / animated thumbnails

YouTube only accepts static images. For animated previews, use a GIF inside your video itself (chapter markers).

Lower-resolution source

YouTube's minimum is 1280ร—720. Sources under that get rejected at upload or display soft. Start from a higher-res photo or render.

Quick A/B testing thumbnails

YouTube's built-in A/B test tool handles thumbnail variant testing better than swapping resized files manually.

Technical details

The 1280ร—720 standard

YouTube's recommended thumbnail is 1280ร—720 (16:9, ~150 KB JPG cap). Smaller dimensions are accepted but the platform upscales for HD displays, which looks soft. Channel art is 2560ร—1440 with a safe area of 1546ร—423 (the safe area is what shows on TV displays, text outside gets cropped).

Why thumbnails matter so much

YouTube's click-through rate is the single strongest signal in their ranking algorithm. A thumbnail at the wrong dimensions either gets letterboxed (looks unprofessional) or cropped (cuts off critical text/face). Hitting 1280ร—720 exactly avoids both failure modes.

File size cap

YouTube caps thumbnail upload at 2 MB. Our default JPG q85 at 1280ร—720 produces ~150-400 KB. Well under the cap. Don't go below q70; YouTube's own compression then layers on top and faces start looking artifacty.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the correct YouTube thumbnail size?
1280ร—720 pixels at a 16:9 aspect ratio is the recommended YouTube thumbnail size. The file must be under 2 MB and in JPG, PNG, GIF, or BMP format. JPG is the best choice. It gives the smallest file at the required quality.
What size is YouTube Channel Art?
YouTube Channel Art (channel banner) should be 2560ร—1440 px. YouTube displays different safe areas depending on device: the central 1546ร—423 px is visible on all devices, 1855ร—423 px on tablets, and the full 2560ร—1440 px only on TV screens. Keep important text and logos within the central safe zone.
Why do YouTube thumbnails look blurry?
Blurry thumbnails are almost always caused by upscaling, uploading a small image that YouTube stretches to fill 1280ร—720. Start with a source image that is at least 1280 px wide and let this tool scale it correctly.
Can I use a PNG for a YouTube thumbnail?
YouTube accepts PNG, but JPG gives a smaller file at the same visual quality. A 1280ร—720 JPG at quality 85 is typically 80โ€“300 KB, well under YouTube's 2 MB limit. PNG thumbnails often exceed 2 MB if the source is large.
Does the crop mode affect what part of my image is shown?
The default Contain mode fits your full image inside 1280ร—720 and pads the rest with white. Nothing is cropped. Switch to Cover if you want the image to fill the entire frame with the excess trimmed from the center. If important elements are near the edges, crop the source image in an editor first, then drop it here.
Can I resize a HEIC photo for a YouTube thumbnail?
Yes. HEIC files from iPhone are decoded in the browser and output as JPG at 1280ร—720. No conversion step needed.
What text and design guidelines work best for YouTube thumbnails?
High-contrast text, a clear subject face or object, and a consistent color palette that differs from YouTube's red make thumbnails stand out in the feed. Keep important elements away from the bottom-left corner, where YouTube overlays the video duration. Use large, bold fonts, thumbnails display at around 168ร—94 px in most views, so fine text is unreadable.
Can I reuse a YouTube thumbnail as a social media post image?
A 1280ร—720 thumbnail works well as a Twitter post image (1200ร—675 is ideal, but YouTube's 16:9 ratio is close). For Instagram it will be letterboxed in the feed since Instagram prefers 1:1 or 4:5. Use the Social Media Hub to resize the same source image to multiple formats in one step.
