Resize Images for Twitter / X

Twitter/X crops images in the timeline to a 16:9 preview before the user clicks to expand. A square or portrait photo often loses its subject to the crop. Resize to 1200ร—675 before uploading and Twitter shows the full image as intended. The header and profile photo have their own requirements, all three are covered here.

Twitter/X uses 16:9 for timeline post previews, 3:1 for the profile header, and square for profile photos. Each format requires a different file.

Three presets: Post Image 1200ร—675 px, Header / Banner 1500ร—500 px, and Profile Photo 400ร—400 px.

All image processing runs locally in your browser using WebAssembly. Your content is never sent to any server until you post it yourself on Twitter/X.

When not to use this tool

GIFs and videos

Twitter accepts video and animated GIF, but this tool only outputs static JPG/PNG. Use Twitter's built-in media editor for those formats.

Multi-image carousels with mixed ratios

Posting 4 images of different aspect ratios in one tweet leads to inconsistent crops. Standardise the ratios first.

Promoted ads with strict spec

Twitter Ads has its own image spec (different from organic). Check Twitter Ads Manager for the exact dimensions for your campaign type.

Technical details

Twitter's 2026 image dimensions

Profile photo: 400ร—400. Header / banner: 1500ร—500 (3:1). Post image (single): 1200ร—675 (16:9). Post image (multiple): 1200ร—600 each (2:1, displayed in 2ร—1 or 2ร—2 grid). Summary large image card: 1200ร—628.

Aspect ratio cropping in feed

Twitter's feed crops uploaded images to 16:9 for single-image posts and 2:1 for multi-image. Anything taller than that gets the top and bottom sliced. Upload at the exact target ratio to control the crop yourself.

Header banner safe zones

The header banner gets the profile photo + bio overlaid in the bottom-left and bottom-center. Keep critical visual content in the top-right two-thirds of the image to avoid having it covered by the overlay.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best image size for a Twitter / X post?
Twitter/X displays in-feed images at a 16:9 ratio. The recommended size is 1200ร—675 px. Images narrower than this ratio are shown with white bars on the sides. Images taller are cropped, Twitter shows only the top portion in the timeline.
What size is the Twitter / X header photo?
The profile header (banner) should be 1500ร—500 px (3:1 ratio). Twitter displays it at different widths depending on screen size, but the 3:1 ratio is consistent. Keep important content away from the left edge, as the profile photo overlaps the lower-left corner of the banner on desktop.
What size should a Twitter / X profile photo be?
Profile photos are cropped to a circle. Twitter recommends a minimum of 400ร—400 px. Uploading at 400ร—400 gives clean results at all display sizes, including Retina screens on mobile.
Why does Twitter crop the top of my image in the timeline?
When you post multiple images or a single image taller than 16:9, Twitter shows only the top portion in the timeline. Users must tap to see the full image. Resize to 1200ร—675 so the full image displays in the timeline without requiring a tap.
What file format does Twitter / X accept for images?
Twitter accepts JPG, PNG, GIF (animated), and WebP. JPG gives the smallest file at high quality and is the best choice for photos. PNG is better for images with sharp text or flat colour areas. Twitter re-compresses JPGs on their CDN, so starting with a clean 1200ร—675 JPG gives the best post-compression result.
Does this work for Twitter Cards (link previews)?
Twitter Cards use the twitter:image meta tag. For the Summary Large Image card, use 1200ร—675 px. For the standard Summary card (small thumbnail), use 1200ร—675 as well, Twitter crops it to square on display. The OG Image Resizer tool has presets specifically for Open Graph and Twitter Card meta tags.
Why does my image not show the Twitter large card even though I set the correct size?
Large image cards require the meta tag `<meta name="twitter:card" content="summary_large_image">` in your page's HTML. If that tag is missing or set to "summary", Twitter shows a small thumbnail regardless of the image size. Also confirm that your twitter:image URL is publicly accessible, Twitter's crawler must be able to fetch it.
Can I use an animated GIF as my Twitter / X post image?
Yes, Twitter/X supports animated GIFs uploaded directly through the compose window, up to 15 MB. However, this tool outputs static JPG files only. It is designed for resizing still photos to Twitter's static image dimensions. To create or resize animated GIFs, use a dedicated GIF editor.
